I took some friends to Provo, where I grew up, to hike to the summit of Squaw Peak via the Rock Canyon Trail.
We hiked up the trail in the morning while the snow was still cold and hard. The hike isn't hard in winter unless the snow is deep and nobody's packed it down or if it's too warm and the snow is melting.
We reached the peak after about 2 hours and after taking in the view, we took our sleds out and let the fun begin.
The snow on the upper ridge to the upper meadow was fast and fun. It was a bit like a luge run with banked sides and corners. I didn't get nearly as much footage of this upper section as I wanted because my GoPro was acting up.
I pulled out my phone and started sledding one-handed once we got to the steep ravine section. It as fast sledding through here until the snow got too thin and we found ourselves on more mud than snow.
Once we got to the main Rock Canyon trail, the snow hardened up again since it's all in the shade. The canyon trail is the perfect pitch for sledding. It's not too fast that you're out of control, but steep enough that you can sled pretty much the entire way down (about 4 miles from the summit).
Toward the mouth of the canyon, the snow thinned out and we had to walk, but with a good snowpack, you can sled right to the parking lot.
Overall, this is a great adventure and one you can't do too many places.
Next time you're in Provo in winter, go try it out!
