Realist methodology asks the questions: ‘what works, for whom, under which circumstances and how?’ Central to the approach is the context-mechanism-outcome configuration, which can be used to develop initial programme theories and analyze data. The CMO configuration is a deceptively simple heuristic that takes time to understand and use appropriately. Following a brief introduction on realist methodology, this webinar will help to: (1) define the CMO configuration; (2) explain its philosophical versus methodological implications and (3) demonstrate its use in practice. There will be time for questions and discussion.
