Joshua 5 takes us to a moment many people overlook, but it may be one of the most defining scenes in the entire book. As Joshua prepares for battle near Jericho, he encounters a mysterious warrior standing with a drawn sword. Joshua’s instinct is the same as ours: Are you for us or against us? But the answer shifts everything. The man replies, “Neither—but as COMMANDER of the army of the Lord, I have now come.”
This is not an angel. This is what theologians call a CHRISTOPHANY—a pre-incarnate appearance of Jesus Himself. And when Joshua realizes who he’s standing before, his response isn’t strategy… it’s surrender. He falls face down in worship. 🙏
And here’s where this moment collides with OUR lives today.
Because most of us approach our battles asking the wrong question. We ask, “God, are You on my side?”—which keeps US at the center. But Jesus reframes the issue entirely. The better question is not “Is God supporting my plans?” but “Am I submitted to God’s purposes?”
God does not exist to advance our plans. We exist to participate in His purposes.
That’s why Jesus doesn’t show up to take sides—He shows up to TAKE OVER. This encounter isn’t about military strategy; it’s about spiritual authority. And the moment Jesus steps onto the battlefield, the conversation changes. From control to surrender. From “bless my will” to “YOUR WILL BE DONE.”
Authority doesn’t flow from WILLPOWER—it flows from WORSHIP.
Before Joshua ever stands tall before Jericho, he kneels low before Jesus. And that’s where victory begins.So the question still stands for us today: Do you want Jesus as an advisor—or do you acknowledge Him as LORD? ‘
