Wessagiriya is one of the most atmospheric and historically rich ancient sites in Sri Lanka, located just a few minutes from the sacred city of Anuradhapura. This remarkable forest monastery offers a rare glimpse into the early monastic life of Buddhist monks who lived and meditated here over 2,000 years ago. Surrounded by massive granite boulders, dense greenery, and a deep sense of silence, Wessagiriya is a place where history, spirituality, and nature come together in perfect harmony.
Dating back to the 3rd century BCE, Wessagiriya was established during the reign of King Devanampiya Tissa, soon after the introduction of Buddhism to Sri Lanka. It is believed that hundreds of arahants and monks once resided here, practicing meditation and leading a simple ascetic life. The name “Wessagiriya” itself is derived from the Pali word “Vessagiri,” meaning “rocky caves,” which perfectly describes the landscape of the monastery.
One of the most fascinating features of Wessagiriya is its cave dwellings. These natural rock shelters were modified by ancient monks with drip-ledges carved into the stone to prevent rainwater from entering. Many of the caves still bear Brahmi inscriptions, some of the earliest written records in Sri Lanka, which mention donations made by kings, nobles, and lay devotees to support the monastic community. These inscriptions are invaluable to historians and archaeologists studying the early spread of Buddhism on the island.
As you walk through Wessagiriya, you can see the remains of ancient stupas, stone pathways, meditation platforms, and boundary markers. Although less crowded than other major sites in Anuradhapura, Wessagiriya holds immense spiritual significance. Its quiet, secluded environment makes it easy to imagine monks meditating in solitude, surrounded only by the sounds of nature.
Wessagiriya is also closely connected to Sri Lanka’s literary and religious heritage. According to tradition, it was here that parts of the Buddhist teachings were memorized and preserved orally before being written down centuries later at Aluvihara. This makes the site not only a place of meditation, but also a cornerstone in the preservation of Theravāda Buddhism.
Today, Wessagiriya remains a peaceful destination for pilgrims, history lovers, photographers, and travelers seeking a deeper connection with Sri Lanka’s ancient past. The site is especially beautiful in the early morning or late afternoon, when sunlight filters through the trees and casts dramatic shadows on the rock formations.
If you are exploring Anuradhapura, Wessagiriya is a must-visit location that offers a quieter, more introspective experience compared to the larger, more famous monuments. It stands as a timeless reminder of devotion, discipline, and the simple way of life followed by ancient Buddhist monks.
