রবিবার দিন সকালের দিকে, অন্ধকার থাকতেই মাগদালার মারীয়া যীশুর সমাধিস্থানে এলেন। তিনি দেখতে পেলেন, সমাধিগুহার মুখ থেকে পাথরখানা সরানো অবস্থায় রয়েছে। তখন তিনি দৌড়ে গেলেন সিমোন পিতর আর সেই অন্য শিষ্যের কাছে, যাকে যীশু বিশেষ স্নেহের চোখে দেখতেন। তিনি তাঁদের বললেন: "ওরা প্রভুকে কবর থেকে তুলে নিয়ে গেছে আর আমরা জানি না, কোথায় তাঁকে রেখেছে।"

"তাতে পিতর ও অন্য শিষ্যটি বেরিয়ে পড়ে সমাধিস্থানের দিকে চললেন। 'দু'জনে একসঙ্গে দৌড়তে লাগলেন, কিন্তু অন্য শিষ্যটি পিতরের চেয়ে দ্রুত ছুটে তাঁকে ছাড়িয়ে গেল আর সমাধিস্থানে আগেই পৌঁছল। 'নিচু হয়ে সে দেখল, ক্ষোম-কাপড়ের সেই ফালিগুলো মাটিতে পড়ে রয়েছে; কিন্তু সে সমাধিগুহার মধ্যে ঢুকল না। "সিমোন পিতরও তখন তার পিছনে-পিছনে এসে সেখানে পৌঁছলেন। তিনি সমাধিগুহার মধ্যে ঢুকলেন আর লক্ষ্য করলেন যে, ক্ষোম-কাপড়ের ফালিগুলো পড়ে রয়েছে। 'তাছাড়া যে-কাপড়টি যীশুর মাথার ওপর ঢাকা দেওয়া ছিল, সেটিও তেমনি পড়ে আছে, কিন্তু ফালিগুলোর সঙ্গে নয়, আলাদা এক জায়গায়, গোটানো অবস্থায়। 'তখন অন্য যে-শিষ্যটি সমাধিস্থানে আগে পৌঁছেছিল, সেও ভেতরে ঢুকল; সে সবই দেখল-তার অন্তরে জেগে উঠল বিশ্বাস। যীশুকে যে মৃতদের মধ্য থেকে পুনরুত্থান করতে হবে, শাস্ত্রের এই বাণী শিষ্য দু'জন তো তখনো পর্যন্ত বুঝতে পারেননি।

"এরপর তাঁরা ঘরে ফিরে চললেন।

1Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. 2So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” 3Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went toward the tomb. 4The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in. 6Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying there, 7and the cloth that had been on Jesus’s head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself. 8Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed, 9for as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise from the dead.
