THE STORY: The 2018 final was a tale of missed opportunities for the Matildas 🇦🇺 and clinical efficiency from the Nadeshiko 🇯🇵. Australia dominated much of the contest and had a golden chance to take an early lead, but Japan’s goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita produced a vital save to deny Elise Kellond-Knight from the penalty spot. Despite Australia creating numerous chances, Japan’s disciplined defence held firm. The deadlock was finally broken in the 84th minute by substitute Kumi Yokoyama, who fired home a stunner just minutes after coming off the bench. The 1-0 victory secured Japan’s second consecutive AFC Women’s Asian Cup™ trophy, making them the first team in 15 years to successfully defend the title. For Australia, it was a second straight final defeat at the hands of Japan – a result they will look to rectify when the tournament returns to Australia in 2026.
