Описание: Day 11 & 12 of our 14-day tour of Western Europe

Day 11

We left Paris for Brussels, Belgium in the morning after breakfast.

It was drizzling when we arrived in Brussels in the afternoon, just in time for lunch at a local cafe/ restaurant with retro interior deco. They are famous for their mussels cooked in white wine, what a delicious meal it was!

After lunch, we proceeded on foot to the Grote Markt, the central square of Brussels and also a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1998. It was still drizzling and the market was crowded with tourists as well. We managed to take a few pics and then went on to see Manneken Pis, the mascot of the city, just 5 mins walk from the Grote Markt. The place was crowded with tourists alike and difficult to get a good photo. We left and went to shop at a nearby famous Chocolate Retail Store. Our final stop for the day was to visit The Atomium, a huge structure built as a tribute to scientific progress and an icon of the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair. The Atomium serves as a museum, an art centre and a cultural destination. We did not get to go up The Atomium but only to admire it from afar. Finally, we made our way to Amsterdam, capital of The Netherlands, to rest for the night at Van der Valk Hotel Schiphol. We had KFC for dinner, bought from the mall opposite.

Day 12

After a hearty breakfast in the hotel, we went to visit a quaint Dutch Village called Zaanse Schans, where people still live and work traditionally. We watched demonstrations on how to make a Clog (shoe) at the Clog Factory ‘De Zaanse Schans’ and the production of cheese at ‘De Catharina Hoeve’. We had some free time to roam around the village and the weather was cloudy and very windy.

Next, we went on to Volendam, a fishing village northeast of Amsterdam. We had lunch at a neat cafe restaurant called Fish&Chips Volendam. They serve mainly grilled, baked or fried fish with chips on the side. It is a small fishing village port that has a population of 22,715. The town is known for its pretty architecture and very well-looked after streets. We walked past the quaint houses and couldn’t help but peer into the beautiful houses along the street.

We left the village and went on to embark on a 1-hour boat tour on Amsterdam’s World Heritage-listed 17th-century canals. We were able to soak up the city’s points of interest such as the grand merchant houses, gothic churches, museums and medieval buildings. Lastly, we came to House of Gassan, a famous diamond factory, with a large jewellery and watch collection, including a Rolex Boutique.

To end the day, we had a sumptuous Chinese sit-down dinner at an Asian Fusion Restaurant, ASIADAM Chinese Restaurant.

Today was packed with activities and is also the last ‘full’ day of our 2-week holiday. Tomorrow we have a half day free before we leave for our flight in the afternoon.
