"In 40 years of diving, I have never seen that!" said nudibranch expert/photographer, Doug K. He snapped photos while I shot shaky video. After the feeding finished, we high-fived underwater. A first for me.
Members of the Paradise Dive Club were ferried to Anacapa Island aboard the Raptor out of Ventura Harbor. The water temp was in the low 50s, but the visibility was 40 feet or better. We would put up with the cold for that.
I was excited and a little anxious to try my hand at macro videography. My setup is a Sony A7Riii with a 90mm macro lens in a Sea Frogs housing. With the great visibility we had I wondered if I made the right choice to shoot macro. And then when the harbor seal and sea lions played with us for an entire dive, I was sure I screwed up.
But when you're diving with a nudibranch pro, you do your best to follow their lead. Doug's vision for finding the tiny creatures is almost a sixth sense, aided by years of practice and passion for the study of nudibranchs. The added challenge of cold, surging water didn't dampen our spirit, but it didn't help keep the nudis in frame either.
