You have probably seen the term 'waste yarn' mentioned in patterns. It's a very useful way of holding live stitches like the sleeve stitches in this example. The process is:
1. Knit up to the place that you want to transfer stitchers to be 'held'
2. Thread some thicker, high contrast yarn on to a tapestry needle
3. Thread the live stitches off the left hand needle and on to the waste yarn
Using waste yarn means that your stitches stay soft and not stretched. It's also really easy to see them and pick them up later.
