In this video I show the full process of making a small set of four powder blue porcelain bowls on the pottery wheel.
The clay begins as white porcelain that I stain using a mixture of purple, blue, and a small amount of black mason stain dissolved into water. I originally expected the combination to create a deep purple clay body, but the chemistry between the stains resulted in a soft powder blue instead.
Each bowl is wheel thrown from 1.2 lbs of porcelain, then left to firm up before the trimming process. During trimming, I carve a tall foot and add carved channels to the walls, which are later filled with black slip to create embedded lines in the surface of the bowls.
After trimming and stamping the bases, the pieces go through two firings where the stains fully develop into the soft powder blue color.
