Hello all,
Welcome to a Victorian heritage tram video. Once again, we are up at Lake Wendouree for another visit to the Ballarat Tramway Museum. For this occasion, they rounded up their fleet of Melbourne W class trams to both launch their newest arrival to the fleet, W7.1029, and celebrate 100 years of service from the W class. The W class trams first entered service in 1923 with production ended in 1956. The 752 trams that were manufactured serviced the entire Melbourne network up until the early 2010s, after which they were only seen on the City Circle services.
The fleet of W-classes owned by the Ballarat Tram Museum includes four trams, each representing one of the 12 sub-classes. W3.663 is the oldest, however it hasn’t been in service since sustaining an accident. W4.671 is in service and painted up in a unique Piper's livery. SW6.939 is named Cuthbert, was a former Colonial Tramcar Restaurant and is now available for special services. And finally, W7.1029 is the newest of the fleet. A visiting W, this being W2.407, is also at the tramway from Haddon, supplementing W3.663.
For the special day, they primarily used W class trams to run the services, while at 12:30 there was a parade of W class trams completing two runs of the track. Along with the four operational W class trams, a Melbourne L-class from Haddon and Scrubber Car 8 joined the convoy.
In this video we capture some of the services along the section of track around Lake Wendouree, the preparation shunting and the tram parade.
