GetSportsFocus.com - The CIF state wrestling tournament consisted of 560 wrestlers competing for the state championship title. After many grueling matches only 28 wrestlers were left to fight for their chance to be crowned state champion.
Clovis high school was the school expected to excel in the tournament and they didn't let their home team and critics down. Not only was this the 4th straight CIF state wrestling title for the high school, but they won with a leading score of 80 points. The Cougars ended the tournament with a score of 197.5 and dominated with 7 wrestlers placing in the top 8.
Freshman phenom Justin Mejia demolished every opponent to get to the final round. He came to the tournament with an outstanding record of 43-1. Mejia exceeded his expectations and came out on top and won his first CIF wrestling title with a 5-3 decision to wrap up his freshman season. In CIF history Mejia became the 12th freshman to win the title.
The last wrestling match of the tournament ended with the heavy weight championship and with no surprise a Cougar, Nick Nevills. The future Nittany Lion for Penn State ended his high school career by pinning his opponent in the second round and was crowned the heavy weight champion. Considered as one of the best of-all-time, Nevills left his mark in the history book with a 105 win streak in the heavy weight division, 200 career wins and 142 pin fall victories.
Clovis wrestling was crowned as State Champions for the 4th consecutive year and for the 12th time in school history. The California wrestling powerhouse will graduate three state placers at the end of the 2013/2014 school year with four strong underclassmen returning next Winter. As Nevills' history as a Cougar finishes the start of a new era with Mejia begins.
