For thousands of years, the cave-dwelling natural environment offered little opportunity for the creation of advanced or refined art, since the struggle for survival consumed the majority of human physical and mental energy.
Although the Aurignacian period began between the initial and final advances of the last natural glaciers and was for a time relatively temperate, climatic conditions became colder in its later stages.

The Solutrean period coincided with the establishment of extreme polar cold. A massive continental ice sheet advanced southward from Scandinavia, covering the plains of northern and central Europe. At the same time, alpine glaciers expanded southward from the Alps and other mountain ranges, transforming the climate of these regions into conditions comparable to those of present-day Greenland.

With the onset of the Magdalenian period, the final retreat of the glaciers began, accompanied by the return of more temperate climatic conditions. (From a climatic perspective, we are still living in the post-glacial era, or, as some scholars suggest, in an interglacial period.)

During phases dominated by cold climates, hunter-gatherer humans sought refuge in caves. It was in this context that Cro-Magnon humans—who first appeared during the Aurignacian period and replaced Neanderthals—took a decisive step forward: they became not only makers of crude stone tools, but artists as well.
