The Atreyi River, which is an international river between India and Bangladesh. In India, its name is Atreyi, and in Bangladesh, it is the Atreyi River. Atrai River total length of the river is about 390 kilometers, of which 269 kilometers are in Bangladesh and 121 kilometers in India. Most of the upper and lower basins of this river are in Bangladesh. The mother river of the Atreyi River is the Karatoya. The part of the river through which it enters India from Bangladesh is bordered by Shankarpur Union No. 8 of Dinajpur district of Bangladesh and by Samjia Gram Panchayat of Balurghat Mahakumar Kumarganj block of Dakshin Dinajpur district of West Bengal state of India. The part of the Atreyi river through which it re-enters Bangladesh from India is bordered by Jalghar Gram Panchayat of Balurghat Mahakumar Balurghat block of Dakshin Dinajpur district of West Bengal state of India and by Dhamurhat Upazila of Naogaon district of Bangladesh. The significant tributaries of the Atreyi river are also tributaries. Garbheshwari River, Kankada River, Gurnad, Besani River, Dhapa River, Shiv River, Fakirni River, Gumani River, Baral River, Bholamati River, Chhota Jamuna River, Gadai River, Barnai River, Nanda Kunjo River, Ichamati, Jamuna, Ghagra, and many small and large creeks are connected to this river, including Atrai Khadi, Kashia Khadi, Ghupsi Khadi, Dakra Khadi, Kalamatia Canal, Dudhya Dhara, Kashiani Khadi, etc. The Atreyi River is currently suffering from severe water shortage. This is because in the neighboring country, a 46-meter-long rubber dam was constructed on the Atrai River in the Jogendra Nagar Haribari Bill area of Biya Ghat Union No. 2 of Gurudaspur Upazila of Natore District under the supervision of the Local Government of Engineers Department in 2004. In addition, the small Jamuna River has entered the Atrai River at Rasulpur in Shahagola Union No. 1 of Atrai Upazila of Naogaon District and another 135-meter-long rubber dam was constructed in front of this fall in 2017. In addition, the Mohanpur Rubber Dam was constructed on the Atrai River at Mohanpur in Shankarpur Union No. 8 of Sadar Upazila of Dinajpur District. The dam began its full functionality on October 22, 2013. As a result, the river has practically run dry before it enters India. To better control the river, another check dam, 222 meters long and 75 meters wide, was built in December 2023 in the Chakbhavani area of South Dinajpur, West Bengal.
In this riverine society, civilization, culture and agriculture revolve around the river, and a river does not only mean a flowing stream, it cannot be that there will be a river and there will be no river banks. In this riverine Bengal, there are numerous banks. Millions of people live in these banks. They mainly earn their living and livelihood by farming and fishing on the fertile and rich soil of the banks. Their contribution to the economy of the country or state is undeniable, the agricultural crops of millions of hectares of land meet the food needs of a large part of the people of the mainland of the society. These people of these banks, isolated from the mainland, are not residents of the state, there is no education system, no health, no minimum facilities for survival, yet from the very beginning of creation, these people, without being experts in the so-called river science, have been living here for generations, relying only on the knowledge gained through tradition. To learn or record the traditional knowledge of these Char people, a group of representatives led by Professor Mehebub Sahana Shahana of the University of Manchester reached the riverside towns and remote Chars of South Bengal from the north. The project was “Come and Walk Along the Rivers: Rethinking Local and Indigenous Knowledge Systems (LINKS) of Char Dwellers in the Bengal Delta" funded by the Leverhulme Trust, UK. The project activities started on 4th April 2025 at Presidency University, then on 5th April, Chargheri, a remote char in the Sundarbans, on 6th April, Char Shambhungar, on the Jalangi River in Nadia district, on 7th April, Anup Nagar Char in Malda, on 8th April, Char Atreyi River in South Dinajpur, and on 10th April, Char Teesta River (Boalmari Village, South Niztraf, Jalpaiguri District). The research or expedition team uncovered numerous traditional knowledge lost from this riverine Bengal, and the secret of survival of civilization in the river char since the beginning of time. This seven-day mutual knowledge gathering has also changed the quality of life of the research team and the people of the char. If the policy makers later use this traditional knowledge of the marginal people of the char in any project or idea related to the river, then we believe that the concept and method of using the conventional river will definitely change.
