In this episode of The Hub, we sit down with Dr. Janine Young — Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at UC San Diego and Division Chief of Academic General Pediatrics, Newborn Medicine, and Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics. Dr. Young shares her journey working at the intersection of medicine, human rights, and public health. From founding the Denver Health Human Rights Clinic to leading refugee health initiatives and advising the CDC on migration and global health, she discusses how clinicians can advocate for immigrant and refugee communities while advancing health equity.
We discuss how Dr. Young’s early experiences in HIV care and global health shaped her commitment to immigrant and refugee health, why legal status can function as a powerful social determinant of health, the role of medical-legal partnerships and forensic evaluations in supporting asylum seekers, and how clinicians and trainees can practice cultural humility while advocating for immigrant and refugee communities.
