Glacier Express (GEX), known as the “slowest express train in the world” is a direct eight-hour end-to-end connection between the major Swiss mountain resorts of Zermatt and St. Moritz. Operated by a joint venture between Matterhorn-Gotthard Bahn (MGB) and Rhaetian Bahn (RhB) on the narrow (meter-gauge) railway network in the Swiss central Alps it provides (together with Bernina Express) scenic and exclusive experience.

The fourth part of our journey takes us from Disentis to Chur, now on the network of Rhaetian Bahn (RhB), following the Reichenau-Tamins to Disentis/Mustér railway line downhill from the Disentis/Mustér at the border with MGB railway network, following the valley and canyon of Vorderrhine river to the confluence where Vorderrhine and Hinterrhine merge to form the River Rhine at Reichenau-Tamins, after which we join the double-track section of Lanquart-Chur-Thusis railway line for the last stretch into Chur. Originally completed in 1912, Reichenau-Tamins to Disentis/Mustér railway (also called Vorderrheinlinie or Surselvalinie), railway line takes us through some spectacular landscape, primarily through the Rhine Gorge canyon (Ruinaulta), a 13-kilometer and up to 400-meter deep canyon of the Vorderrhine river that has been listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008, and is best accessed by the Rhaeatian Bahn trains via the stops at Reichenau and Trin. On the last segment from Reichenau-Tamins to Chur, we also follow what is probably the most known dual-gauge track segment, between the EMS Chemie chemical factory and EMS-Werk station to Chur, where a standard-gauge track is interleaved with RhB meter-gauge to enable access to EMS Chemie from the standard-gauge railway network.

Like other lines in the MGB and RhB network, it uses unusual 11kV 16,7Hz electrification. While MGB uses rack-rail sections on it’s railway network, Reichenau-Tamins to Disentis/Mustér is a completely adhesion line, with maximum gradients of 27‰, thus the change of locomotives in Disentis/Mustér for Glacier Express is a common operation (from rack locomotive of MGB to standard adhesion rolling stock of RhB). At Chur, Glacier Express trains turn around to backtrack until Reichenau-Tamins where they continue to Thusis to complete their end-to-end journey from Zermatt to St.Moritz via Albula railway line (Albulabahn).
