President Stubb Declares Finland a 'Security Provider' as NATO Faces New Era of Defence and Global Realignment
Finnish President Alexander Stubb delivered a confident doorstep statement at the NATO Summit in The Hague, declaring Finland a “security provider, not a security consumer” only two years after joining the Alliance. He highlighted three key reasons this summit is historic: a return to NATO’s collective defence mission focused on deterring Russia, a rise in defence spending to Cold War levels, and the birth of a more balanced, Europe-empowered NATO.
President Stubb emphasized Finland’s dual defence doctrine—strong national military capabilities and full commitment to NATO’s Article 5. He dismissed any doubts about U.S. commitment under President Trump, stating that “golf is a good way to discuss business.” Responding to journalists, Stubb spoke candidly about the shifting world order, noting that the West must recognize the end of its dominance and prepare for a more multipolar, transactional, and disorderly global landscape.
He urged the Alliance to learn from past mistakes, work closely together, and adapt to new realities. With Finland now sharing the longest NATO border with Russia, Stubb affirmed his country’s responsibility and trust in NATO’s collective security framework.
