Under this heading the Bibliothèque nationale de France has a three-page original score for melodic instrument and keyboard by Lili Boulanger [only sixteen] with neither title nor instruments specified. Besides violin or flute, the BNF catalogue also lists the oboe as an alternative instrument on which the range of notes c#’ to ab” can be played comfortably, as on the violin or flute. The densely written piano part with the same oscillating accompanying figures found in later pieces contains some surprising chromatic progressions, enharmonic changes and harsh dissonances. Apart from two short piano pieces ([Morceau] 1905 and [Valse en mi majeur; both fragmentary] 1906) this is the first composition by Lili Boulanger to have survived in complete form. It shows a willingness to experiment with harmonies that might be associated with the Wagnérisme that was then fashionable in France and which we also find in other pieces of the time by this composer, such as the Maurice Maeterlinck setting Attente also dating from about 1910, which at first sight looks very similar. There we find the tempo marking ‘Assez lent’ which might well be used for this Pièce, too; the printed edition of Attente (1918) with its sweeping legato phrases (chiefly two-bar phrases in the piano accompaniment, adjusted in the voice part to match the lines of the poem) also provides some ideas for interpretation here. The composer considered this piece complete, despite its sketch-like nature, as evidenced by the date and signature at the end: ‘Mercredi 5 juillet 1910/Lili Boulanger’.
A copy of the original manuscript has kindly been made available by the Bibliothèque nationale de France, Paris.
