In this video we visit the new Preston station, situated on the Mernda Line in Melbourne's northern suburbs. The new station opened on the 5th September 2022 as part of a large grade separation project to remove four level crossings on the Mernda Line, which also included the rebuilding of nearby Bell station. Preston station in particular was grade separated to remove the level crossings at Cramer Street and Murray Road.
In the video we visit the new station on the weekend after opening. We take a quick look around the new station before seeing various Metro Trains Melbourne X'trapolis trains arrive and depart the station. We also see a three-car X'trapolis pass through the station on a driver training run. We also unbox a showbag full of goodies, get lost inside Preston Market, and drink some lemon squash.
Like nearby Bell Station which was built under the same project, Preston Station was designed by Wood Marsh Architecture. The station building at ground level has a unique design with striking coloured vertical panels, which apparently was inspired by the barcodes of products at the adjacent Preston market. It looks like a licorice lolly. The theme continues inside the concourse with bright colours and yellow ceilings. The platform is more basic in design with only black coloured canopies, and like many stations these days it has those stupid upward sloped shelters that don't provide the greatest of weather protection. At least here the platform is fairly wide and there are undercover seating areas in the centre of the platform where the ceiling height is lower, so it's not all bad. I do think though that with such a wide pedestrian catchment from Cramer Street and Murray Road, that this station should have had two entrances to enhance pedestrian connectivity, and perhaps be located further north closer to Murray Road to allow for easier connections between bus services.
The amazing thing is though that on opening weekend the station was practically fully complete; both the platforms and concourse with all the station facilities operational including the customer service counter, enclosed waiting room, toilets, and both lifts to the platform. Usually these days newly grade separated stations open in a relatively uncompleted state with some station facilities not operational. Mind you there is still some wider works to be conducted in the precinct, including landscaping, new open spaces, and the reopening of Cramer Street. Construction will continue with the project expected to be fully completed by early 2023.
