In this recorded webinar, MSW/psychotherapist Amy Haertel joins Kathleen Zavarise for an honest conversation about the mental and emotional realities of life after transplant.
This webinar explores the emotional realities of life after transplant—for both recipients and caregivers. While medical teams focus on physical recovery, many people find that mental health challenges emerge after the crisis has passed. During transplant and immediate recovery, survival mode takes over. When stability returns, delayed grief, trauma responses, identity shifts, and overwhelming emotions can surface. This “crash” is common and normal.
The discussion highlights how both recipients and caregivers experience profound role and identity changes. There can be grief for the life that existed before transplant, survivor’s guilt, hypervigilance, and uncertainty about what comes next. Even when a transplant is considered a medical success, emotional recovery is ongoing—and support systems often fade too soon.
The webinar also shares practical coping strategies, including nervous system regulation techniques, open communication around changing roles, and the importance of seeking therapy with professionals trained in trauma or chronic illness.
If you or someone you love is navigating life after transplant, this conversation offers validation, insight, and guidance for the journey.
