I am Hawaiian born and raised in this tropical Polynesian archipelago which starts up here from the Hawaiian islands and goes south to Easter Island then across to New Zealand, Tahiti, Samoa, Fiji, Tonga, Guam, the Cook Islands, parts of the Philippines, Okinawa, Japan and back up to Hawaii.
So, our ancestors sailed these seas for many years which is pretty cool to know. There is a time in some of us when we think about what the mainland is like (anywhere outside of the Polynesian triangle), especially hearing from the Malihini (visitors) that constantly tell us "you wouldnʻt want to live there" there, is where they came from. Soon "they" are living here. We share stories of our home, lifestyle, tradition, culture and the aesthetics of these islands. Eventually we venture beyond the waters of Polynesia. A lot of us have gone and made it in big ways. Some return and never go back. Some are quite glad to go beyond the waters. Now for some like myself, I returned and developed a greater love of these islands and its people. Like JD said in Sweeny Todd "my mind is far from ease". I could not stop writing of these awesome lands, because I had something to compare it with. So, we recognize the total different lifestyles. Many people now live here and have also developed the lifestyle. This song is just a piece of the lifestyle. Many have written poems, some music, made art, cooked food and all the stuff visitors participation in for the island experience. Pretty awesome. They all know "This Ainʻt Da Mainland".
Watching them tumble in the surf as I go flying by makes me laugh so hard, I fall off my board for nothing, good thing, ʻhad to rescue couple of them. They are so happy thinking they are surfing by acting like they are drowning. You know what I talking about Andy. They finally see the flags on the beach. Like Buffalo, I take them to the shore, nod my head and paddle back out. Dis ainʻt da mainland.
