No Reserve. This rare 1939 Lincoln Model K Sport Sedan has unique coachwork by longtime carriage builder Willoughby Company of Utica, New York. Back in 1926, Willoughby was commissioned by Edsel Ford to build closed bodies and quickly they became a major supplier to Lincoln's custom body program. Between 1937 and 1939, five were built with "suicide" rear doors and six, like this one, with the rear doors hinged on the "B" pillar. The waning of the carriage trade and the sunset of the big Model K Lincolns had a profound effect on Willoughby, which was liquidated at auction early in 1939. That was the end for the Model K, too, which did not appear for the 1940 season. Its light green paint is nicely complimented by tan wool upholstery. In 1939, Lincoln painted dashboards in body color, but window sills were polished hardwood. This car has a matching wood dashboard header and a fold-out table in the rear compartment. The wood is all highly polished and in excellent condition. The seats are similarly unworn and unmarked and set off nicely with contrasting dark piping. The car is equipped with optional metal-covered dual-side mount spares, a clock, and dual cigar lighters. A three-time award winner, this car received the Ford Motor Company Trophy and Best of Class honors at the Lincoln & Continental Owners Club Mid-America National Meet in Ithaca, Illinois, and a First Place Senior award at the LCOC Eastern National Meet at Ellenville, New York. It participated in Eyes on Design at Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan, and was a Motor Muster participant at Greenfield Village in Dearborn the same year. The sole example of its body type produced in 1939, it represents an uncommon opportunity to acquire a car that can truly be said to be "one of one." VIN: K9568.
