🇮🇳 Big Change in Parliament: Digital Attendance Meets Artificial Intelligence
A major transformation is taking shape in India’s parliamentary system as the Lok Sabha introduces stricter attendance rules alongside the gradual integration of artificial intelligence into its daily functioning. These reforms reflect a clear move toward greater accountability, efficiency, and active participation by Members of Parliament. 💬⚡
Under the revised attendance system, an MP’s presence will now be counted only if they are physically present inside the House and seated at their designated place. Signing attendance registers outside the chamber will no longer be permitted. This means that if an MP arrives after the House has been adjourned, their attendance for that day will not be recorded, and they will not receive salary or allowances for that sitting. The move is intended to ensure that attendance represents genuine participation rather than just a procedural formality. ⚖️📊
While explaining the changes, Om Birla stated that the purpose is not punitive but corrective. According to him, the reforms are aimed at promoting discipline, punctuality, and meaningful engagement within the House. He emphasized that a strong democracy requires lawmakers to be present, attentive, and actively involved, especially during important discussions such as the President’s Address. 🏛️✨
At the same time, Parliament is steadily moving toward greater technological adoption. Although proceedings are already largely paperless, artificial intelligence is now being tested for real-time speech translation inside the House. Current trials reportedly show around 80% accuracy, with efforts ongoing to achieve near-perfect precision. From the upcoming Monsoon Session, AI-based translation systems are expected to become fully operational, helping reduce delays and language barriers during debates. 🤖🌐
The impact of AI is already becoming visible in parliamentary workflows. Tasks that once took nearly four hours, such as transcription and translation, are now being completed in nearly 30 minutes. In the future, AI tools may also assist MPs with research support by helping them access data, background information, and policy references more efficiently. 🚀📚
Beyond Parliament, concerns have also been raised regarding the functioning of State Legislative Assemblies. Suggestions have been made that every state assembly should function for at least 30 days a year, as the number of sitting days in several states remains relatively low. With many assemblies already livestreaming proceedings and Parliament functioning in a fully digital, paperless mode, the nationwide digitisation of legislative work is expected to accelerate further. 📺📈
👉 Overall, these reforms represent a major step toward a more transparent, accountable, and technology-driven democratic system — one that values participation, encourages responsibility, and uses innovation to strengthen governance. 🇮🇳✨
