DIE YOU YUPPIE BASTARDS DIE

To mark this milestone, here's four (4) adverts for the Renault 25 (Twenty-Five) from 1985-88, starring a familyful of smug yuppie bastards who are probably perfectly nice people but whom I still hate on general principles. These people spend their entire lives worrying about two things: their boring careers and whether their boring careers will mean they get to drive a nice car (which in this case is the Renault 25 - one of the most prestigious cars imaginable for people who couldn't afford actually prestigious cars). The Renault is positioned as a key life goal for the sort of soulless reptillian career-ladder Joneses who were the demigods of Thatcher's Britain. It's Taster's Choice for even bigger arseholes, basically.

Apparently the first advert caught on, because the second advert here is a trailer for the REAL second one two years later, although in that time Yuppiedom has ceased to be a point of aspiration as a) the economy a splode, and more importantly b) the working classes, after seven years of this sort of thing, find their patience almost used up. Consequently the trailer-advert has a deliberately ironic tone, as Renault hedge their bets about their characters' appeal.

Finally, having secured a third term for their free-market Matriarch, the family return one last time to relaunch the benighted vehicle, which had a sleeker body and new suspension but was the same damn car aimed at the same damn people. History doesn't record what happens next. Somehow, they survived Black Monday, but I can't see their bloody homeopathic ethnic trinket store (or whatever the hell it is they "do") surviving the recession. Hopefully by 1991 they've been forced to move into a council flat and eat their young.

But at least Rosalyn Landor is hot, in that unattainable upper-class sort of way. (She's a perfectly nice lady in real life, as well; it's her character I hate)

This was linked to by the Financial Times website in 2014. They would have embedded it but it had swearing in the title, for which I slightly apologise. But only slightly. It was also cited in a biography of Adam Faith by David and Caroline Stafford, and that's true.
