A powerful 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck Baqing County in the Nyingchi region of Tibet on Thursday night, killing at least 16 people and injuring 65 others. Chinese state media reported that more than 300 homes collapsed, electricity supplies were disrupted, and over 12,400 residents were relocated. Eleven of the injured remain in serious condition. Rescue operations in the high-altitude region, situated above 4,800 metres, have been obstructed by rockfalls and blocked roads. More than 400 aftershocks forced residents to stay outdoors in freezing temperatures. Premier Li Qiang called for urgent rescue and medical operations, and China allocated 50 million yuan for relief efforts.
