At least fifteen migrants have died after a boat carrying dozens of people collided with a Greek coast guard vessel off the island of Chios, according to Greek authorities.
The coast guard said the migrant boat was travelling without navigation lights, ignored patrol signals and suddenly changed course, causing the deadly crash late Tuesday night. The overcrowded vessel capsized and sank, throwing all passengers into the sea near the Turkish coast.
Authorities recovered 14 bodies and rescued 25 survivors, including women and children. One rescued woman later died in hospital. Most migrants were Afghan nationals, with one Moroccan reported among them.
Human Rights Watch blamed Greece’s migrant “pushback” policy for the tragedy, while the migration minister placed responsibility on smugglers. Opposition lawmakers have called for an investigation into the incident.
