In this follow-up to the Klein–Gordon stress-energy tensor derivation, we now focus on the Dirac field and compare it directly to the scalar case.
We derive the canonical stress-energy tensor for the Dirac field using Noether’s theorem and show how its asymmetry arises due to the presence of spin. In contrast, the stress tensor for the Klein–Gordon field, derived earlier, is naturally symmetric — because scalar fields have no spin degrees of freedom.
To resolve the asymmetry in the Dirac case, we introduce the Belinfante–Rosenfeld symmetrization process, which absorbs the spin current into the stress tensor, making it suitable for coupling to gravity.
