On thirty first May nineteen forty, on the concrete mole at Dunkirk, Major General Harold Alexander was in charge of a beaten army that any normal commander would be getting ready to surrender. His troops were cut off. The French beside him were falling back. German guns were already reaching the beaches. Every fresh report on his table said the same thing: if he misjudged this, most of the British Expeditionary Force would end up in German prison camps and Britain might not have a real field army left to fight with.
