Minden Cathedral of St. Gorgonius and St. Peter the Apostle (Mindener Dom) is a Roman Catholic provost church in the East Westphalian city of Minden in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Minden Cathedral was the episcopal church of the Diocese of Minden, founded in Minden by Charlemagne around 800. The Catholic diocese had already become closer to Protestantism during the Reformation in the mid-16th century. With the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, the diocese was de facto abolished, as was the Bishopric of Minden, which had emerged from the diocese as a spiritual territory. After the abolition of the diocese, the cathedral was given the status of a Roman Catholic parish church, which was elevated to provost church in 1859. Today it belongs to the Archdiocese of Paderborn.
Over the centuries, the cathedral's architectural history evolved from a simple hall church to a Carolingian-Romanesque basilica with a monumental westwork to the present Gothic hall church with a Romanesque west wing. The light-filled, High Gothic nave and its large tracery windows were stylistically influential for a number of later church buildings. For almost 600 years, Minden Cathedral remained virtually unchanged until it was almost completely destroyed in a bombing of the old town on March 28, 1945, during World War II. It was rebuilt between 1946 and 1957 under the direction of Cathedral Provost Josef Parensen and the architect Werner March.
Among the cathedral's most valuable art treasures are the Romanesque Minden Cross from the early 12th century and a replica of the Golden Tablet; the original is held by the Berlin Sculpture Collection. In 1168, Bishop Werner of Bückeburg married Henry the Lion and Matilda of England in Minden Cathedral.
