The broken rib stitch is a lovely variations of the classic rib stitch pattern. It's a simple 2-row repeat:
CO an odd number of stitches
RS: knit across
WS: *p1, k1*, p1
The broken rib stitch will curl a bit on the edges, so a little selvage is recommended to prevent that. You can, of course, also knit it in the round as well. In this case, you the repeat is as follows:
CO an even number of stitches
R1: knit across
R2: k1, p1
Repeat rounds 1 & 2 until you reached the desired lenght
