A 3.3-magnitude earthquake has hit England's North West, with residents woken by trembling homes and a shake that felt like an 'explosion'.

The British Geological Survey (BGS) confirmed the seismic event, with their data showing the quake occurred three kilometres beneath Lancashire at 11.23pm on Wednesday.

Natural phenomenon and earthquake monitoring website Volcano Discovery also recorded the earthquake, though their reading placed it at 3.4 on the Richter scale. Their information suggests the quake was shallow and extensively felt by residents, consistent with their findings.

One social media post described the earthquake as feeling like "felt like an explosion and vibration coming from underground".

Another individual commented that it was "so powerful to shake the whole house", while another remarked that it "sounded like bricks falling/the roof falling in."
