Locking On the Fly – Lock 6 to Lock 7 Upbound Wheelhouse View

Описание: This video shows me taking the Algoma Buffalo upbound from Lock 6 to Lock 7, using a technique we commonly refer to as “locking on the fly.”

“On the fly” means entering the lock without first pressing the shoulder of the ship up against the approach wall. Instead, the ship is timed and positioned so we can proceed directly into the chamber under control.

This is not a shortcut and it’s not rushing the lock — it’s simply an efficient way of locking when conditions allow. I regularly use this method when transiting from Lock 6 to Lock 7 and from Lock 7 back to Lock 6, as it reduces unnecessary maneuvers and keeps the ship moving smoothly.

The video is filmed from the wheelhouse, showing:
• Approach speed and alignment
• Timing the lock opening
• Maintaining control without using the wall
• Smooth entry into the chamber

There’s no narration added after the fact — what you see is real-time shiphandling and decision-making based on experience, conditions, and familiarity with the locks.
