Building food sovereignty requires widespread access to specialised facilities and orgaised networks of growers. That’s why we’re crowdfunding to build a community mycology lab - a space for shared exploration and education where we can build a community for Edinburgh mycologists.
Our community lab will be open to members of the public and be kitted out with all of the equipment necessary to produce grain spawn, liquid cultures and agar plates. It will have microscopes to study spores and mycelium, and a fridge with shared cultures for people to experiment with growing a variety of mushroom species.
The lab will be a space to experiment with growing new strains of edible and medicinal fungi; training mycelium to grow on specific waste stream substrates; cloning local wild species of mushrooms; preparing slurries for guerilla inoculations and more.
We will organise regular skillshares to learn from each other and facilitate lab skill workshops covering the basic techniques needed to grow your own cultures and produce spawn.
