In today's video I show you how beginner piano improvisation students can take 1 single lick or riff and play the same device on multiple chords in a chord progression.
A lot of newbie piano improvisation students think they need to always change scales or approach every single chord in a chord progression differently. Yes, this is 1 way of approaching piano improvisation but it's definitely not the only way.
In this video, I show you how occasionally taking a little melodic improvisation and repeating it over different chords can sound absolutely fantastic.
So, what chord progressions can you use this piano improvisation technique over? In this video I played a 2 5 1 chord progression but you can really use this technique over any diatonic chord progression. Here's a list of some chord progressions you can use this technique over.
I IV V
ii V I
I vi ii V I
I vi IV V I
I V vi V IV.
This piano improvisation device can also be used over blues chord progressions, rock piano songs, country piano, classical piano, etc. etc. Really any style of music can benefit from this.
The reason this technique works is because each mode (or scale) for each chord type shares common tones.
For example, many people will think the dorian mode when they're playing over a minor chord.
And many people will think the mixolydian mode when they're improvising over a dominant chord.
And many people will think the ionian mode (the major scale) when they're improvising over a major chord.
The interesting part is that all these scales have the same notes in common. That's why when you build little melodies in your piano improvisation and repeat them over chords that are in 1 key it will sound great.
Now special note needs to be payed attention your rhythm. Also make sure you're paying attention to the fact that I'm playing the same rhythmic motifs every single time as well.
In combination with devices like chord tones, chromatic notes, blues scale, pentatonic scales, bebop ideas, licks, riffs, scale tones, and the melodic repetition I teach you on this video, you can really make some interesting solos.
