In this special podcast episode for Black History Month, we delve into race and the civic responsibility of the arts.
In this recording we attempt to answer the following questions:
Following the murder of George Floyd in July 2020, there was heightened media coverage for the Black Lives Matter movement which led to profound public action. Many organisations within the arts and culture sector responded with racial equity and social impact statements. Have these statements led to any meaningful changes from arts organisations?
What accountability do arts organisations have? Do they have a civic responsibility?
Is there a place for positive discrimination? Does this lead to fear of tokenism vs meritocracy?
What role does programming take in challenging public perception and diversifying our cultural landscape?
What is the role of the arts and culture to authentically tell stories from people of ethnically diverse backgrounds?
What challenges do people from ethnically diverse communities face with accessibility to the arts?
In this lively conversation, we are thrilled to be joined by these wonderful panellists:
Michael ‘Mikey J’ Asante – producer, composer, musician, dancer and DJ; co-founder and co-artistic director of the hip-hop dance company, Boy Blue
Kaya Brown – Artist Coordinator at Polyarts and Creative Access alumnus
Cliff Fluet – Joint Head of Media & Entertainment at Lewis Silkin, Chair of the Ivors Academy Trust, and Help Musicians Trustee
Samir Savant – CEO of St George’s Bristol and trustee for the HarrisonParrott Foundation
This episode is part of our ‘Under the Spotlight’ podcast series where we shine a light on ‘challenging’ topics in the arts, and focus on guests living these experiences and who are working to create change in the sector.
