🟢 Introduction to Lev Tolstoy:
Lev Tolstoy, born in 1828 into a Russian aristocratic family, is known as one of the greatest writers in history, author of such masterpieces as War and Peace and Anna Karenina. After a youth marked by a life of excess, a progressive sense of emptiness pushed him into a deep spiritual crisis. This crisis culminated around his fifties, when, despite literary success and a comfortable life, he felt tormented by the question of the meaning of existence. Tolstoy found the answers not in institutionalized religion, but in a personal faith and a simple life inspired by the teachings of Christ and folk wisdom.
His thought focused on the idea that the meaning of life lies in selfless love and connection with humanity. He rejected materialism and social conventions, arguing that true happiness is found in living by universal moral principles, such as nonviolence and resistance to evil. Tolstoy developed an ethical philosophy that influenced figures such as Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. promoting an existence based on self-discipline and the rejection of violence, both physical and spiritual.
In the last years of his life, Tolstoy abandoned luxury and landed property to devote himself completely to living consistently with his ideals. Despite conflicts with the Orthodox Church, which excommunicated him, and with his family, his message remained powerful: the meaning of life is rooted in love for others, the search for truth and simplicity. Tolstoy died in 1910, but his thought continues to inspire those seeking deep meaning in existence.
