It is frightening. The scammers call to tell you your social security number has been used in a crime and they're coming to arrest you if you don't cooperate. I got one of those calls a few days ago and played along to see what happens.
"your social security number by the federal crime investigation department, we need to talk to you as soon as possible."
The recorded message claims it's from the Social Security Administration. If you answer the call they say they're putting you in touch with an FBI agent.
"my badge number. It is 5801"
The caller, usually someone with a middle eastern accent, gives you their name and official badge number and explains your social security number was used to rent a car that was later found with blood and cocaine inside. And if you don't cooperate, you'll be arrested by federal agents within hours.
"what is your date of birth? 11/14/1972. And your social?"
I made up both. Giving up that information gives scammers two of the most important pieces of personal information.
Seniors often fall victim to these scams, but young people aren't far behind. The FCC says over the past 3 years, millennials filed 25% more fraud reports than people over the age of 40.
In the past two weeks I've met people in their 20s who gave up their information in the same scam. One, said they purchased over $2,000 in gift cards and delivered them to scammers. Neither would admit it on camera.
If you get one of these calls, hang up. If they leave a message, don't call back. don't talk to these people. It's serious.
