When I ask you "what is two plus four?" you are likely to think of the number six; however, 2% of people would think of the number 6 but also think of a colour such as blue! These people experience a condition known as ‘synaesthesia’ which is a multi-sensory perception where seeing or hearing words results in the additional sensation of seeing a colour. The majority of these people have always had this experience all their lives while some (very rarely) experience it as a result of an event during adulthood.
Many creative people in history including Nabokov, Van Gogh, Nietzsche, Duke Ellington and Marilyn Monroe were synaesthetes; however, contemporary artists such as Billy Joel, Pharrell Williams and Billie Eilish also experience this amazing melding of senses. In addition to ‘grapheme-colour’ synaesthesia, some individuals also experience variants such as time-space (seeing years or months in a visual space around them) or mirror-touch (getting a physical sensation when observing someone else doing something).
In this talk, I give an overview of the emerging understanding of synaesthesia and what we can learn about ‘standard’ brain functions by looking at this incredible phenomenon.
