Main Bazaar is located at the centre of Kuching city, facing the waterfront. Made up of a long row of two-storey chinese architecture shophouses.
It is the best place to shop for antiques, handicrafts such as wood carving, mat, basket, sarong/material with traditional motifs, traditional costumes, accessories and other souvenirs.
The hornbill rhinoceros is the State of Sarawak national bird, thus Sarawak is also known as "Land of the hornbills"
The name Kuching is thought to derive from the malay word kucing meaning cat, or most likely from the chinese word for port ("cochin")
or from the malay name mata kucing (cat's eye) for the longan fruit (a popular trade item).
There are some cat and hornbill statues around Kuching and souvenir shops selling cat and hornbill statues and wood carvings.
