Roger Bushell (1910-1944) was a South African born Englishman who became a successful barrister and also joined the RAF (as a part time officer) in 1932. He lived what would now be known as a 'playboy' lifestyle (lucky him!) and got up to all manner of capers in his pre-war life.
That all changed at the outbreak of WW2 when he became a Squadron Leader. Unfortunately his war only lasted one afternoon as he was shot down on his first sortie over Boulogne on the 23rd May 1940.
He later led the Great Escape and was subsequently murdered by the SS.
The film 'The Great Escape' was made in 1963, not 1968. It seems I couldn't read my own handwriting on the script.
The smashed propeller from the Aeronca was displayed in the pub at Botolph's Bridge well into the 1970's but subsequently disappeared. The owners helped me with this film and do not know of the propellers whereabouts, it was missing in 2005 when the current owners bought the pub, however, it was certainly there around 1998.
