Morning Meteorologist Ryan DePhillips has a look at the weather ahead. Clearer skies with mostly calm winds and dry conditions have allowed for the seasonably bitterly cold conditions this morning after yesterday's coolfront moved through. Air temperatures in the north are starting off close to 0° while most are ranging from the teens to the 20s from I-40 to the north, while areas to the south are mostly ranging from the upper teens to the low 30s with the mildest air being in far-southern areas or in the far-Northeast Plains. Noticeably milder air will form this afternoon compared to yesterday afternoon because of the westerly warming winds returning as afternoon temperatures will mostly be ranging from the 40s to low 60s from northwest to southeast from high to low elevation as high pressure aloft building to the southwest will allow for the temperatures to rise. Warmer-than-normal conditions are set to become more widespread today, as well as in the few days ahead, because of stronger west-northwesterly winds to go up, over, and down the southeast-sloped mountain faces, sinking, compressing, drying, & spreading a warming process at the surface as a result. Even less moisture will continue to be the short-term trend as the pendulum swing pattern of somewhat-damp mornings for a few with breezy easterly winds shifting to southwesterly drier winds in the afternoons will still continue periodically ahead. Clouds from the southwest will move above the even drier air from tomorrow into Thursday. Strong upper-level winds from a powerful disturbance will then combine with low-level Gulf moisture arriving from the east with at least a couple of rounds of gusty cold fronts moving in from later Thursday into Saturday, leading to widespread rain & mountain snow showers that will most likely turn to snow for a large swath of the viewing area as below-normal temperatures will be widespread.
