I took Livvy and Tilly on a Christmas Pheasant Hunt yesterday. Thanks to some great dog work, I was able to harvest my bag limit, but we still had a 1.5 mile walk back to the truck. I was a little wore out from sloshing through the wetlands so I tried to choose a route through some really short grass that would be easiest for me to walk through. I was really surprised when the dogs continued to find birds in the shorter cover. Since I already had my limit and didn't need to worry about shooting, I pulled out my phone to video a few bird contacts.
This 3rd video in this short series picks up just a few minutes after Part II left off. Livvy and Tilly had continued tracking a few hundred yards until Livvy had locked up on point again. I started filming as soon as I saw Livvy on point. I knew that Tilly was somewhere behind me so I was turning to try to capture the moment she froze into honoring Livvy. When I turned to her, she had already locked up. I like this video because you can see that Tilly really does stop to back Livvy as soon as she sees her on point...even if it is a long ways away. Once I saw Tilly honoring, I started walking towards Livvy to try to flush a bird. You can see that Tilly remains steady even while I walk quite a ways in front of her.
But no self-respecting wild Nebraska rooster is going to sit tight in cover this light. So inevitably, Livvy breaks point to continue tracking. When she moves, Tilly moves. Both dogs put their heads down to try to pick up the track. I like that even though Tilly is so aware of Livvy and honors her, she is also obviously learning to trust her own nose enough to search and track independently of Livvy.
I didn't know it at the time, but it turns out we were chasing 3 roosters. The dogs continued tracking after I ended this video and eventually locked up on point one final time. The roosters flushed wild before I could get my phone out again. While I'm disappointed I couldn't capture the ending, these 2 videos still showcase the kind of dog work that a 5-month old puppy is capable of with some exposure.
