For Native peoples of Southern California, including Cahuilla and Luiseño communities, fire has always been a part of how we care for the land. Cultural burning is a traditional practice passed down for generations to keep ecosystems healthy, reduce dangerous wildfires, and maintain balance between people and nature.
This video explains what cultural burning is, why Indigenous communities use fire, and how it benefits the land, plants, animals, and future generations. Long before modern fire suppression, Native peoples understood when, where, and how to burn in ways that protected the environment and supported life.
Cultural burns help clear excess dry vegetation, promote new plant growth, protect sacred and food plants, and reduce the risk of destructive wildfires. These practices are not about destruction, but responsibility, knowledge, and respect for the land.
This video is meant to educate, share Indigenous perspectives, and highlight the importance of restoring traditional land stewardship practices today.
