Buß und Reu is an alto aria from Part I of J.S. Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, BWV 244, sung immediately after Peter’s denial of Christ and the crowing of the cock. With a text by Bach’s librettist Christian Friedrich Henrici, known as Picander, the aria reflects on penitence and sorrow rather than narrating events, turning the Gospel moment into personal meditation. Bach scored it delicately for alto voice with obbligato flutes and continuo, creating an intimate, inward sound world that underscores the themes of remorse and repentance. The aria was first heard at the Passion’s initial performance on Good Friday, 1727, in Leipzig, and it remains one of the work’s most poignant examples of Bach’s ability to fuse theological reflection with expressive musical detail.
