It’s been on the list for a long time but recently I made it down to London and got myself a ticket to explore the mighty HMS Belfast docked close to Tower Bridge on the River Thames in London. I got myself an audio guide (included in the ticket) and set about exploring one of Britain’s most significant World War II ships.

HMS Belfast was commissioned at the outset of the Second World War and participated in some key missions including escorting arctic convoys from the West to the Soviet Union and participating in the Battle of the North Cape. She was heavily involved in the Invasion of Normandy supporting landings by British and Canadian forces in the Gold and Juno Beach areas. The ship went on to support United Nations naval forces in the Korean War. HMS Belfast was decommissioned in 1963.

In the 1970’s following a decision by the British Government to scrap the ship, the Belfast Trust was established and the ship was handed over to trustees in 1971. Thanks to them we now have the HMS Belfast preserved as a war museum that the general public can access and explore - as I did today!

In this vlog I get to walk on the ship’s historic decks, visit the Captain’s Bridge, see her powerful engines and learn about the history and service that the ship and her crew gave.
