💡Abstract💡
The Horizon Europe project IDEATION (https://ideation-euproject.eu) aims to prepare the development of the Digital Twin of the inland waters (rivers and estuaries, lakes, reservoirs, wetlands, snow and ice, urban water, groundwater, coastal water, and transitional water). IDEATION is based on cross-border cooperation, involvement, and commitment of stakeholders at European level. Through a flexible and adaptable stakeholder engagement approach, stakeholders are currently engaged in the co-creation of the project solutions via Multi-Stakeholder Forums (MSF). In parallel, a comprehensive review, namely OpenKIWAS (Open Knowledge Inventory for Inland Water Systems) is under construction to make an inventory of current solutions in the field of inland waters, digital twin for water, and application of the Digital Twin Ocean (DTO). By systematically mapping requirements to existing functionalities and tools and addressing any identified gaps, IDEATION ensures a well-organised and efficient approach to the design of a reference architecture for the Digital Twin of Inland Waters. To determine the strengths and weaknesses of the results of IDEATION, as well as the opportunities and threats that the project faces, a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats analysis (SWOT) will be performed. The final objective of IDEATION is to deliver a roadmap for the integration of relevant existing assets and development of necessary digital functionalities for a digital twin for inland waters, interoperable with the DTO to ensure the consistency and continuity of water management, interoperable and avoiding duplication of inland water functionalities already available in existing twins of Destination Earth and EU data spaces initiatives.
