The term 'maka tugi' is literally a stone (maka) and to burn (tugi). When Niueans work on leveling out a big rock, they would pile up firewood on top of a rock and burn it until the rock breaks up into small pieces. The process can take hours - and we're not sure if that 'practice' has something to do with this traditional song but story goes (at least for those few lines) - 'You stood on the burnt rock and wave your handkerchief whilst I wept in sorrow...'
The song is Manu Folau's version of old classic 'Tu a koe he maka tugi'
