Reigning champion Burrough Hill Lad carried a massive weight in the Greenall Whitley Breweries Handicap Chase but could only finish fourth, as fellow Gold Cup hopeful Earl’s Brig powered home to victory.

Then came the cruel twist: days later, Burrough Hill Lad was injured schooling at home, ruling the defending champion out of Cheltenham.
