This is a full rescore of the original 1922 Nosferatu using classical music of the early 20th century for each and every scene, set to the Photoplay/BFI restoration. It is, in my opinion, the best available version of this film.
The original soundtrack by Hans Erdmann was lost sometime after the film premiered in Berlin. You can find recordings online, but these are approximations based on tiny snippets of the sheet music. If you ask me, the only other version worth checking out is James Bernard's rescore. It's a little "Hollywood"-sounding for my taste, but it strikes the right tone and has excellent orchestration throughout.
I’ve had more than one friend tell me they “tried” to watch Nosferatu before, but couldn’t stand the “boring” music. Not referring to any specific version, but rather any other cut available to watch. The complaint is always the same: the music doesn’t match the scene.
I saw an opportunity to pull from the work of late Romantic and early Modern composers who were active (or at least alive) in the 1920s when the film was first released, and assemble my own ideal soundtrack for the film. The music is dissonant and “gothic,” but still melodic and deeply emotional. It mostly comes from a very Central/Eastern European background, just like the film itself. I hope that when people seek out this masterpiece of filmmaking, they will find my version first.
If you enjoyed it, don’t forget to share this with your cinephile friends!
