5 Amazing Facts About the Aids to Scouting Book by Baden-Powell

This little book of the 20th century became extremely popular in England with the postindustrial youth. Baden-Powell struggled to get the book published as he was in the midst of a siege in the little town of Mafeking (today Mafikeng) South Africa in the Second Boer War. Many scout leaders have heard of this book but few have read this iconic text. Here are some fantastic and lesser-known facts about this little book that started the World Organization of the Scouting Movement.

🔑 Show Notes: It is often said that the “Aids to Scouting for NCOs and Men” started the entire Scouting movement. Over time it has become almost mythical and such a small book created something as huge as the scouting movement. Here are five unknown or lesser-known facts about this amazing book.
1. The “Aids to Scouting” almost was captured in the siege of Mafeking. BP was finishing the final copy and sending it back to his English publisher just before the siege began in October 1899. BP recalled that the shelling would have certainly burned his manuscript along with many other documents during the siege.
2. 1899 “Aids to Scouting” was not Baden-Powell's first book. His first book was published in 1884 named “Reconnaissance and Scouting”.
3. “Aids to Scouting” just like the other books that BP authored were intended for military use. It was also published in 1900, in England while he was away on active service at the siege of Mafeking in the Second Boer War. Many of the Boys Brigade in England picked up a copy of the book and made it very popular.
4. The book was meant to be small enough to fit in a uniform pocket of the day. This way it could be used in the field as a reference. Later editions featured a Red cover replacing the traditional Gray cover that many of the military books of the time used.
5. Boys of the Empire Magazine, December 28, 1901 first article about “boy scouts” featuring Baden Powell and the siege of Mafeking. The article focused on BP's book “Aids to Scouting”. In 1915 thair was an expanded edition which had 14 chapters and 57 pages. Some of the earlier editions had up to 200 pages depending on text size and illustrations.
